Cancanilla de Marbella is a genius of the compás who has miles of wisdom and experience behind him. Known for his vocals, he began dancing, so he knows the ins and outs of flamenco to perfection.

Biography of Cancanilla de Marbella

Singer. Sebastián Heredia Santiago, known by his artistic name, Cancanilla de Marbella, was born in 1951 in Marbella, Malaga, in a family deeply rooted in the "jondo" art. His mother, María Santiago, was a cantaora (flamenco singer) and his brothers, "La Chicho" and "Taroque" are dancers.

He made his debut at the age of 11 in El Platero, a tablao in his hometown. His career began as an accompaniment singer, but eventually he became a lead singer. A few years later, at the age of 15, he joined the companies of José Greco and Lola Flores, with whom he toured the world. 

Cancanilla de Marbella has taken his art to different corners of the world such as Japan, United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba, South Africa, Jordan, among many others. And, of course, he has toured almost the whole of Europe. 

Recognitions of Cancanilla de Marbella

Cancanilla de Marbella worked in Madrid in the tablao of Manolo Caracol and in the Corral de la Morería with the bailaora Blanca del Rey. There he learnt the secrets of flamenco singing and dancing, a training which he complemented and which made all the figures of the dance world take notice of him.

With Javier Barón he won the first Giraldillo de Baile at the Bienal de Sevilla. He then further perfected his solo singing, winning several prizes, the most important being the Premio Enrique El Mellizo, which he won at the prestigious Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco de Córdoba in 1998. From that moment on, he launched his career as a cantaor, becoming the most sought-after and recognised artist in Andalusia.

During his long career, he has worked in the most important tablaos and peñas in the world of flamenco, both in Madrid and in the rest of Spain.

Discography of Cancanilla de Marbella

At the end of the 80's his first album appeared, and in 1993 he recorded, together with Enrique de Melchor, a second album. He took part in the "Grabaciones Históricas" (Vol. 42) and in 2003 he released "Sonido gitano de Málaga". In 2007 he released "El Cante de Cancanilla" which belongs to the collection recorded on the "Fontana" label in 1972, and has been re-released by José Manuel Gamboa.

In 2020 he presented his latest album "En mi delirio", where he is accompanied by a cast of artists of high musical caliber. In this album Cancanilla de Marbella makes a passage through the traditional cantes, starting with tangos, fandangos, seguiriyas and soleá.

Cancanilla de Marbella has a perfect command of all the flamenco palos. His singing has references to the classics, but he has managed to create his own personal stamp. Even today he shares billboards with the stars of the moment at renowned festivals. Undoubtedly, he is one of the great masters of the 21st century.
