A Tribute to María Vargas at the Heart of the 2025 Biennial
The IV Flamenco Biennial of Cádiz, Jerez and Los Puertos was officially presented on June 3rd at the Palacio Provincial of Cádiz. Directed by Mario González, the event pays tribute to María Vargas, one of the great voices of the flamenco golden era, born in Sanlúcar de Barrameda in 1947.
González, founder of the iconic flamenco venue La Guarida del Ángel, celebrated the festival’s growth since 2019 and reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and showcasing the art of flamenco. “The Biennial came to stay,” he said.
30+ Events Across 9 Cities
This year’s edition includes a rich mix of concerts, tributes, exhibitions, lectures, and workshops. The nine participating cities are Cádiz, Jerez, San Fernando, Puerto Real, El Puerto de Santa María, Sanlúcar, Chiclana, Algeciras, and newcomer Chipiona.
Confirmed artists include Pedro El Granaíno, Macarena Ramírez (premiering her new show “Espina”), Sandra Carrasco, David de Arahal, Anabel Rivera, Encarna Anillo, Alba Espert, José de los Camarones, José Méndez, El Mijita, among many others. A special dinner in honor of María Vargas at the historic Venta de Vargas will be one of the event’s highlights.
María Vargas: A Life in Flamenco
María Vargas began singing at the age of nine and won acclaim at the National Flamenco Art Competition in Córdoba in 1959. She shared the stage with legends such as Paco de Lucía and Manolo Sanlúcar and received the Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts in 2019. “I’m grateful to be honored while still alive,” she shared, encouraging young artists to preserve flamenco’s cultural legacy: “When I’m gone, may flamenco live on forever.”
Women and Flamenco Take Center Stage
The Biennial also reaffirms the crucial role of women in flamenco. Tania Barcelona, regional delegate for the Andalusian government, highlighted how “women and flamenco have always walked hand in hand—and once again, they take the lead in this Biennial.”
Educational talks by flamenco scholars such as Manuel Martín Martín, José María Castaño, and Juan Garrido will enrich the festival with cultural and academic depth.
