Album Luzía, Paco de Lucía

The album Luzía (1998, Universal Music) was a catharsis for the genius from Algeciras. It is, above all, the expression of the pain caused to the guitarist by the death of his mother, with whom he was with day and night during the six months of illness until the fateful end. But it is also an album that brings out the sorrow for the early death of his sister María, for the death of Camarón de la Isla, for the beautiful childhood lived in Algeciras…

Paco de Lucía explained on his official website:

The whole album is impregnated with that suffering, that pain I felt seeing my mother leaving me, apart from the fact that I also told her on one occasion that I was going to dedicate it to her… and she was very happy… She gave me a beautiful smile, a smile that I will never forget”.

Songs by Luzía y su cante

The song Luzía is a seguiriya to that loving mother who sang Portuguese songs to him when he was a child. It is clear to whom dedicated the rondeña Camarón. And he dared to sing on it, this being the first album on which he has done so.

Río de la Miel plays it por bulerías. It is a tribute to his neighbourhood in Algeciras, where this river flows through its streets.

And so, track after track, Paco de Lucía brings out all his emotions through this work. Perhaps the most intimate of his discography. Current 2008 re-release by Universal Music.
