Every summer, Jerez de la Frontera is a place of, for and by flamenco. And among all the events you can enjoy, there is the cycle Caló Flamenco which actually encompasses three other major events: Noches de Bohemia, Viernes Flamencos and Fiesta de la Bulería. In 2023, the entire edition is dedicated to to the centenary of Lola Flores, with shows focusing on his figure, legacy and personality.
It is no coincidence that the Fiesta de la Bulería is a fundamental flamenco event in this Andalusian city. Most flamencologists agree that the bulería was born in Jerez. It is also no coincidence that Lola Flores is being honoured. Not only is the centenary of his birth (21 January 1928) being celebrated in 2023, but he spent his childhood in the streets of Jerez and was imbued with the flamenco art that he exuded with an overwhelming naturalness.
The Fiesta de la Bulería has 56 years of history and is proud to be “very Jerez”. This year’s closing show has an impressive line-up dedicated to Lola Flores with performances by Aurora Vargas, Dolores Agujetas, Juana la del Pipa, Felipa del Moreno and Manuela Carpio.
The participation of the flamenco clubs in the activities of Caló Flamenco and, therefore, of the Fiesta de la Bulería, is one of the characteristics of this festival. Above all, because they are the true soul of flamenco art in the city, the ones who keep the flamenco offer alive all year round beyond economic constraints. Los Cernícalos, La Bulería, Buena Gente and Tío José de Paula are among the most active in all kinds of cultural events.
