The anticipation surrounding the new creation by the C\u00e1diz-born dancer could already be felt before the curtain even rose. Macarena Ram\u00edrez presented ESPINA<\/em>, the most ambitious work of her career, as part of the 4th Flamenco Biennial of C\u00e1diz, Jerez and Los Puertos, at the Teatro Principal in Puerto Real.<\/p>\n

The result surpassed all expectations: a work of art filled with maturity and beauty, in which the artist took charge of both the stage direction and choreography, with musical direction by Javier Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez.<\/p>\n

With a carefully crafted aesthetic \u2014 the stage wrapped in roses and thorns, synchronized projections, and original music \u2014 Macarena Ram\u00edrez was joined by a cohesive ensemble: Iv\u00e1n Orellana (dance); Jes\u00fas Flores and Ana G\u00f3mez (vocals); Samuel Cort\u00e9s (violin); Manuel P\u00e1jaro (percussion); and Javier Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez (guitar and musical direction).<\/p>\n

On the technical side, essential to this production, stood out the work of Manuel Otero (lighting design), Mar\u00eda Nevado (video creation and projections), and Colin Preston together with Regina Astorga (sound).<\/p>\n

The costumes \u2014 another of the show\u2019s great successes \u2014 were entirely designed by the artist herself, including those worn by the musicians, with the special collaboration of Jos\u00e9 Galv\u00e1\u00f1 on the spectacular bata de cola<\/em> featured in the guajiras<\/em> and alegr\u00edas<\/em>. Color gradually took over the stage, symbolizing transformation and rebirth.<\/p>\n

The curtain opened to an impressive stage design and a contemporary piece set to seguiriyas<\/em>, in which Iv\u00e1n Orellana confronted himself until meeting Macarena in a breathtaking pas de deux<\/em>. Then came a solemn sole\u00e1<\/em>, where castanets turned into tears of pain: the birth of the wound.<\/p>\n

In the second act, titled \u201cThe Burning Pain\u201d<\/em>, Ram\u00edrez unleashed her power in a dazzling zapateado<\/em> and a series of tangos<\/em> centered around a chair covered in roses and thorns \u2014 which she finally kicks away in an act of liberation and catharsis.<\/p>\n

\u201cStrength and Bloom\u201d<\/em> marks the rebirth: the black mannequin \u2014 a symbol of pain \u2014 disappears, and an explosion of color takes over. Beautiful guajiras<\/em> and alegr\u00edas<\/em> lead to an unforgettable finale, as the dancer vanishes within her shawl while her fellow performers surround her to dance a buler\u00eda al golpe<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The ovation lasted more than eight minutes, with the entire audience on its feet. ESPINA<\/em> is a show worthy of the world\u2019s greatest theatres, capable of moving both flamenco aficionados and newcomers alike. Because what truly matters is to move the soul \u2014 and Macarena Ram\u00edrez achieves this magnificently.<\/p>\n

In the program notes, the artist leaves a message that beautifully encapsulates the essence of her work:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe all carry a thorn. Sometimes it hurts, sometimes it gives us strength. This show is my way of dancing it. Today I don\u2019t dance only for myself \u2014 I dance for you\u2026 so that when you watch, you remember that even from pain, life can be born.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

ESPINA<\/em> is, without doubt, a unique production. Her next performance will take place on October 24 in Seville, at Teatro Los Remedios<\/strong> \u2014 a show we wholeheartedly recommend not to miss.<\/p>\n
