In November 2023, the Latin Grammys leave the U.S. and come to celebrate the awards gala in Seville. The last winners in the flamenco category are in the image, Las Migas. And the nominees to collect this year’s award for best flamenco album have just been announced: Israel Fern\u00e1ndez, D. Guerrero, Juanfe, Ni\u00f1a Pastori and Omar Montes.<\/p>\n

Latin Grammy al flamenco: \u00bfqui\u00e9nes han sido hasta ahora los elegidos?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In that 2000 edition,<\/strong> in which Shakira and Carlos Santana were among the winners, the award for the best flamenco album made its debut. It was won by Camar\u00f3n and Tomatito for Par\u00eds 87.<\/em><\/strong> El Lebrijano, Remedios Amaya, Juan Habichuela and Miguel Poveda were also nominated.<\/p>\n

Paris 87<\/em> is a live recording, released long after Camar\u00f3n’s death in 1992. These are performances from the cantaor’s last period accompanied by his second life-long partner, Tomatito.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Awards from 2001 to 2010<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The first decade of the 20th century would bring very good news, once again, for Tomatito,<\/strong> who would repeat the award in 2005 and 2010.0. When he won the Grammy again in 2013 for Soy Flamenco,<\/em> he became the only flamenco artist to receive this award four times.<\/p>\n

Lucky from 2010 to 2021<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This decade was dominated by Paco de Luc\u00eda.<\/strong> The 2004 Best Album was followed by En Vivo<\/em> (2012) and Canci\u00f3n Andaluza<\/em> (2014, posthumously). The latter was also voted the Best Album of the Year, making it the first flamenco artist to receive this double honour. Ni\u00f1a Pastori would win again in 2011 and 2016. The year 2015 was for<\/strong> Entre 20 A\u00f1os: A La M\u00fasica De Paco De Luc\u00eda,<\/em> but the award went to the producer, Javier Lim\u00f3n. Vicente Amigo (2017), Arc\u00e1ngel <\/span>(<\/span>2018) and Antonio Rey (2020) would close the decade of success. Un Nuevo Universo<\/em>de Pepe de Luc\u00eda would be the best flamenco album of 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pol\u00e9micas<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n

En 2019, no hubo Grammy para nadie del flamenco.<\/strong> La raz\u00f3n, seg\u00fan la organizaci\u00f3n, es que no hab\u00eda 25 trabajos para nominar en las candidaturas (o, al menos, de la calidad que se requiere), y eso es una de las reglas del certamen. No fueron pocos lo que criticaron tal decisi\u00f3n y lo consideraron una afrenta directa a este g\u00e9nero.<\/span><\/p>\n

La edici\u00f3n de 2022 tambi\u00e9n trajo una peque\u00f1a tensi\u00f3n. L<\/i>ejos de las figuras m\u00e1s ortodoxas del flamenco, el Grammy se lo llev\u00f3 el grupo Las Migas por el \u00e1lbum Libres<\/em>.<\/strong> Estrella Morente, que estaba nominada,<\/strong> al igual que su hermano, Kiki Morente, reaccion\u00f3 tiempo despu\u00e9s subiendo a Instagram una entrevista suya en el Diario de Burgos con una declaraci\u00f3n poco afortunada dado el contexto: %22A m\u00ed me da de comer Burgos, no los Premios Grammy<\/strong>%22. Luego la borr\u00f3, pidi\u00f3 disculpas y hasta aqu\u00ed. <\/span><\/p>\n

Controversies<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n

In 2019, there was no Grammy for anyone in flamenco.<\/strong> The reason, according to the organisers, is that there were not 25 works to nominate in the nominations (or, at least, of the required quality), and that is one of the rules of the competition. More than a few criticised this decision as a direct affront to the genre.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2022 edition also brought a little tension. It divides the programme into three cycles: ‘De pe\u00f1a en pe\u00f1a’, ‘El baile por bandera’ and ‘M\u00e1laga cantaora’.<\/i>ar from the more orthodox figures of flamenco, the Grammy went to the group Las Migas for the album Libres.<\/em><\/strong> Estrella Morente, who was nominated,<\/strong> just like his brother, Kiki Morente, reacted some time later uploading to Instagram an interview with him in the Diario de Burgos with an unfortunate statement given the context: “Burgos feeds me, not the Grammy Awards.<\/strong>“. Then he deleted it, apologised and that’s it. <\/span><\/p>\n
